The environment is the most treasured gift that everyone should take good care of. It’s a comfort that so many industries are already concentrating on too. The field of procurement also joins in the mission of doing business with a heart for the environment. This is where green procurement comes in.

Environmental Responsibility Implemented

These days, environmental responsibility has been placed on the critical level in every kind of business. Every company—bid or small—are mandated to give regard to the environment as they manufacture products and render services to their customers. Large corporations and the federal government are also encouraged to acquire products and services that do not harm the environment. Various businesses are now being evaluated through measurements of carbon footprints. A carbon footprint is the measurement of the green house emissions that are produced by the company’s activities.

How Companies Should Encourage Regard for the Environment

It’s important for businesses to implement green procurement. Even if it isn’t mandated, company owners should make sure that they have low carbon footprints to help the environment. According to Annie Berger (greensupplychain.org Relationships Director), there are about 60% to 70% of the carbon footprint that a company has is found in their regular supply chain. She recommends that a corporation or a government agency should make efforts to find even just a single alternative that’s environmental friendly when procurement takes place. The following questions should be added in the Request for Proposals that they send out:

  • How does the small business evaluate the suppliers when it comes to the criteria of environmental performance?
  •   Is there a sustainability report published annually by the supplier?
  • An explanation should be given for the supplier’s program for reverse logistics for the agency or the corporation to understand the reclamation strategy when the product reaches its expiration
  • Is there a list of chemical exclusion provided by the supplier so that the company is assured that there are no environmentally hazardous chemicals in the processes done?

Companies are also encouraged to conduct visits to the supplier sites so that they may be able to evaluate how green their suppliers are. The suppliers should provide an environmental management system so that you’ll know how they implement their regard for the environment. The company owner should also ask even the low ranking personnel what their understanding of green procurement is.

Celebrate World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a very important occasion that celebrates the importance of the environment. For an entire day, you get to appreciate the world around you and how it takes care of everyone and everything in it. This is why everyone is trying to reduce carbon footprints. Green procurement businesses are really getting more than profit because they also help take care of the resources they use.

In the spirit of environmental respect and love, Head Exposed joins the Earth in celebrating World Environment Day.
