In our semi-unenlightened age, it is sad to note that war is still a very real fact of life. Terrorists have not gotten any fewer; in fact, they have become even more shrewd, skilled and dangerous. Not all are willing to make peace, and in fact, peace is quite a rare commodity in today’s world.

That is why we have Memorial Day. It is a reminder and testimony to the strength of our spirit and an affirmation that deep within our very souls, what we long for is lasting peace. And as the parades in this year’s celebration come to a close, as we finish our barbecue picnics and go home after enjoying the celebration and the fireworks, let us remember still what our countrymen have sacrificed for us. Let us keep in mind the high price they willingly shed so that we may enjoy our freedom. Let us not dilute the blood that they offered to Liberty by being indifferent to the cause they held.

As businessmen and service providers, what can we do to honor our heroes? The government has a lot of needs, and many of these needs are concerned with the supplies, equipment, transportation, and other requirements of troops. Millions of active and reserve personnel have such diverse needs involving various industries, and the Department of Defense welcomes private contractors to provide products and services for the military.

If you are among the many small businesses who want to help our men and women in uniform in their projects and endeavors to improve the status of our armed forces, then you are invited to come and see if your business is qualified in providing for them. Their necessities are many, and your business, product and service may just be what they seek. As long as your business is duly registered, financially stable and offers quality goods or services, you are invited to place a bid and join the thousands of small companies in government procurement.

Some of the industries required by the military include steel and metal; munitions and gunpowder; leather, plastic and rubber; and manufacture, parts, maintenance, and service of vehicles of all kinds, whether air, land or sea. To name a few more, there are supplies for military offices; supplies for soldiers in the barracks and the field; clothing, shoes, garments, helmets, knapsacks; IT products – electronic and computer systems and related services; construction services; and medical supplies and equipment.

The wide ranging list enumerated above is not exhaustive; the Armed Forces is a virtual society that makes use of almost anything and everything that a regular community needs, and more.

The brave men and women defending our way of life will always live in our hearts. They are our sons and daughters; our wives and husbands; our fathers and mothers. They are a part of us and we are a part of them. As Memorial Day nears, consider what you may be able to do to help them out in their mission in keeping our country free. Government procurement may be your opportunity to help in a small or big way.
