Mothers are regarded not only as the vessels and precursors of life but they also raise and love the life that they have brought out. As years went by, the role of women in society has evolved into something that exceeds anyone’s expectations. In this day and age, women have not only conquered the pains of giving birth and the chaotic domestic lifestyle but have also ventured into a field that men once dominated—business. Mothers are also able to provide for their families with their entrepreneurial skills. Whether it’s inside or outside of the home, mothers have found ways to earn and have definitely been excellent in doing so. This is basically why Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world.

Mother’s Day celebration was started in Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. Romans dedicated their Hilaria (spring festival) to the mother goddess, Cybele. This started about 250 years ago, before Jesus Christ came. It was always held in March, during the last three days, with masquerades, games, and parades.  During the Greek spring festival, they offered to the maternal goddess (Rhea—mother many deities and wife of Cronus). The tradition spread out into the United Kingdom and was called Mothering Sunday, which came from the fourth Sunday of Lent that honored the Mother of Christ, the Virgin Mary. Mothering Sunday started in England during the 1600s. It lasted for 40 days after Easter Sunday. The celebration included prayers for the Virgin Mary and gift giving to all mothers courtesy of their children. Even if the employees were far away from their mothers, their employers told them to honor their mothers on that special day. The usual gift given back then was simnel, which was a special pastry filled with fruits. The celebration of Mother’s day almost dies in the 19th century but was saved after the Second World War.

In 1872, Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of a Mother’s Day celebration in the United States. She said that Mother’s day should be a day of peace and should be annually celebrated. Anna Jarvis founded Mother’s Day in 1911, even if she remained single and didn’t have any children of her own. She was called Mother of Mother’s Day.

This red-letter occasion was celebrated by 46 different countries which include Belgium, Australia, India, UK, Italy, Denmark, Finland, China, Canada, Turkey, Japan, Mexico, and the USA. Of course, they have different dates for it but nonetheless, everyone in the world honors the women who gave birth to them, raised them, and continue to guide them in everything that they do.
